Bang

Two seconds.

Bang

Another two seconds.

Bang

Every two seconds, per the rules, a new shot rang out from Colton's SIG. Eight total, not allowed upon entry of the gun range to have his ninth ready in the chamber. This was a good way to let out steam- shooting things that was. He probably would have preferred to shoot a tanerite filled self-healing target out on some property, but around here that wasn't likely. Where there was property it always seemed to be filled with horses or some such and most of them weren't used to the sound of gun fire.

There was nothing quite like the smell of GSR or seeing the freckle of it over your hands after a long few hours of pelting faceless outlines of some poor sap. The standing, though, the standing was less pleasant. Colton couldn't find a comfortable position standing, so had switched to seated firing, only to switch back and forth several times throughout the three hours he was at the range. The only time he ever truly felt comfortable was either heavily medicated or laying down, and even laying down had it's pains. Sometimes he wondered if it would have been better to have his leg amputated, rather than all these steel rods and pins stuffed in.

Finally, exhaling a heavy sigh as he lowered his weapon, Colton stared down his ally at the silhouette on the other end. The poster-sized page with light dotting through from the backside wafted gently back and forth until he reached up and held the button down for a return. It whooshed across the alley until stopping abruptly before Colt. He tugged it from place, reviewed it, crumpled it, and began to pack his gun up. It took him a short time and after tossing his targets into a trashcan by the range door, exited from the shooting gallery to the small mudroom that divided it from the rest of the range. From there he could safely remove his ear muffs and goggles, making sure to step on the sticky floor-pad to remove residue from his shoes upon exit into the parlor.

Every step from his right leg was a jerkish movement that caused Colt to visibly limp, unable to bend his leg at the knee much more than it was worth. He approached the counter and leaned on it, wincing softly as he waited for service. At that point it was just a matter of collecting his I.D. and being on his way, since he had paid previous to entering the shooting gallery.

Work was still an adjustment. Nothing would ever be the same, or anything close to the military and what being a navy seal had meant. It was physical and if you couldn’t hack it you didn’t get a second chance, pass or fail live or die, that was what the seals had been to Abel. Oh but he had loved it, maybe not every second of it, but there was a love buried deep down for everything he had learned from his six long years of service. Hell, if he hadn’t missed home so much he wouldn’t have thought twice about pledging himself another chunk of years, he had a few good years left before he was too old to be a seal but he would have transitioned to something else if not for his family and having already missed so much.

Working at the range was a good substitute. He worked with guns, the smell of gun powder everywhere and the dull echoes of gunfire that could sometimes be heard when the range doors were opened for people to pass through them. Whatever his parents’ issues with him working here he would never understand, he liked being here and he got free range time whenever he wasn’t working and a discount on ammo, what wasn’t to like? Ugh, but his parents were too… future driven to appreciate that he was happy here; they wanted him to have a wife, kids, and a fridge filled with something other than beer and left over pizza.

He had just started his shift about an hour ago and things had been mostly dead around the shop and he figured it would stay that way for a while. Feeling the sunglasses he had resting in his head slip forward he removed them and set the carefully on the glass case that served as a counter, and forced his hand through his hair. ‘Later’ he called to his coworker who was on his way out the door and settled in for his shift. His dark eyes stole a glance through the glass door where he could see his precious Alice waiting for him to get off work.

Alice hadn’t been anything overly impressive when he first found her but now the 2012 GSX-R 750 had been freshly painted and enhanced well beyond her stock features, the bike was one to be reckoned with now. He didn’t bother to look when the range door opened and closed. “Hope you swept your shells, they don’t pay me enough to clean.” He called, already irritated with the lazier shooters who refused to do their part. The counter was on the far side from the range so after a moment of letting the person make their way to the counter he turned to face whoever it might be.

“No fucking way!” A smile broke out across his face, replacing the typical annoyed expression he seemed to have. “Colton?” It was a question but it was rhetorical, he wouldn’t have forgotten someone he had grown up with. “Shiiiit, I thought for sure I’d know if you were still here, we used to cause so much trouble in this town.” The tone in his voice evidence enough of how happy he was to see a truly familiar face. Lochland had changed so much in six years, he hadn’t believed in until he had seen it though. In his excitement, he had forgotten to grab the man’s id from the back wall. “How you been?” Abel had been back for a few months and it still hadn’t been enough time to run into all his old friends.

Immediately on Abel breaking out into a smile and questioning his name, Colton looked over both shoulders as if confused on who this Colton guy was. He pointed at himself stupidly with a confused expression, but the rouse was short lived and an equally as happy smile split his own mug, "I'll be damned," He carefully set his hard carry case atop the glass display case, "The hell did you get back!? Last I'd heard you were off kicking ass and taking names!" Abel had grown, that was for sure. Or was it just the fact he had grown in a physically mature way? But what did it matter- faced with a familiar face he hadn't seen in years, Colton could have been beside himself. "Good, uh, well, Mostly good." He hesitated, glanced past Abel, and then sighed, "Mostly. Still here anyway! Heh, I was keep'n trouble makers like us in check, till, well," He motioned towards the wall where the IDs were kept and then tried to playfully thwap Abel on the arm before pointing towards a cane which had also been stored behind the counter. "Pass me that cane, will ya? How have you been, man?"

His moment of hesitation, he was sure, had been one of those mood swings trying to interrupt what should be a happy reunion of sorts. But Colton was determined to push it aside for once in favor of re-greeting Abel. He was excited to see his old friend, probably like that 'stupid excited' level. You know, where you get flooded with all those awesome memories when times were easy, food didn't give you heart burn, and he'd had use of both legs! He didn't wan't to go into the entire story of why he used to keep trouble makers in line right that second; however by the second he was growing more uncomfortable in his standing position. He couldn't put too much weight on the glass case and likewise with his own leg.

While he waited for his cane to hopefully be passed to him, Colton just smiled like an idiot. The cane itself had originally been left behind purely for the fact he hadn't wanted to deal with it while in the range. Never failed, no matter where he leaned it against the thing was always falling over and getting in his way. At least here it could be leaned against the wall in a carpeted area and wouldn't be likely to fall over and pose a trip risk for himself or anyone else.

Abel’s assumption was returned, briefly, with a confused glance around as the other tried to play it off as though he wasn’t the person Abel had been addressing. He almost bought into it too until Colt cracked a smile to rival his own.

The navy had been great for Abel, he had come a long way in those six years and he had made bonds of friendship that he would always remember. What he had taken away from his previous career was great and he would carry those memories with him for life but it wasn’t the same as seeing people that he had grown up with. Growing up he and Colt had spent a good amount of time together, getting into trouble just for the thrill of it. There weren’t too many memories from his youth that didn’t have Colt in them and now here they were again.

“I'll be damned, The hell did you get back!? Last I'd heard you were off kicking ass and taking names!” Abel managed to grin even wider at the comment, feeling that it was an accurate statement. “Haven’t been back too long, couple a’ months. Figured six years in the Navy was long enough. Started missin’ this place.” He had missed Lochland and his family, the homesickness was what had kept him from renewing his contract. He was surprised he hadn’t seen Colton before now, he figured any of his siblings would have said something about it, but they hadn’t. No matter. But how had the other been, and what had he been up to while Abel was away? “Good, uh, well, Mostly good. Mostly. Still here anyway! Heh, I was keep'n trouble makers like us in check, till, well, Pass me that cane, will ya? How have you been, man?”

‘Mostly good’ wasn’t great but it was better than not good. When the cane was requested he glanced over his shoulder, not having realized that the thing was back there until then. He grabbed that, and the id, and returned both to Colton across the counter. “No way. You badged up?” It seemed they had both grown up in those six years he’d been gone. “That’s cool though, I mean, it sounds like you were kickin’ ass and takin’ names of your own, huh?” He didn’t want to bring up the past tense of what Colt had said, he figured it wasn’t something the other wanted to talk about or he would have already explained.

“I been good. Mom n’ dad, they get on me for shit but that’s probably the worst of it.” That was something he didn’t really want to get into either but the words had come out before he could catch them so he just shrugged. “What you got here? A SIG?” He gestured to the gun that had been placed on the counter and shuffled his own weapon from its holster on his left hip. “I carry this one most but I have a few others at home.” He had picked up a good bit of gun knowledge from the military and was building on it now that he was working at the gun store.

As the cane and ID were passed over the counter, Colt shifted his weight and turned his torso to better face Abel while receiving the items, giving a shallow grimace as he did so, "Thanks." The ID was tossed onto the counter and the cane taken down to his right side and used immediately to relive the pressure he had temporarily put on it. "Six months?" He sounded offended, "I feel like someone could have called me," He glanced at Abel and shook his head, "Jerk." But it was said in a that joking tone that Abel would hopefully still remember, and then Colt moved on. "I left for a few years, just college and the academy. But that homesickness, it get's you every time." "I nearly didn't come home, but..sometimes I just wonder..." He trailed off in a quieter voice, nearly a mumble, but left it at that again. Abel had been too close of a friend growing up to keep him in the dark, and really it wasn't some big secret. He was sure most of Lochland had at some point known about his accident, if the sheer amount of flowers in his hospital room had been any indicator. Old news, though. Not that it bothered him. Still, right now just wasn't the time to enter into that conversation.

"Oh yeah? Well, what else is new with that," He had fished his wallet from his back pocket but looked up with a grin at Abel's mention of his parents. Parents were always getting onto their offspring about crap, weren't they? Colt's mother still showed up at random at his apartment, let herself in with the spare key, and would give him a good ear full for the state of his apartment if he had let things slip too much. But she knew even then she held back quite a bit, considering he couldn't clean it top to bottom to match her standards- not that he had ever been able too, but now even more so. Sometimes she'd try to start cleaning and that would just set off a whole round of arguments. Ah well.

He jerked his chin towards the gun case, "Yeah, yeah, SIG, help yourself if you'd like." He was certain his friend had seen hundreds of them come through, "'S my daily in the blue, not that it see's much use, which is good I guess. I have a Glock Nine-teen back at the pad 'n a few others." His apartment was healthily stocked with both ammunition and guns to fire said ammunition. He was handicapped, so in the event that someone did break into the apartment, he needed means to protect himself. Realistically he wasn't about to jump up and be able to defend himself without a weapon. "Nice, may I?" He nodded at Abel's weapon, "Bit hefty for a daily, isn't it? An Omega?"

All he could muster at the jab for not calling Colt was a pitiful shake of his head and a sigh. He was disappointed that he felt like he had missed out on so much could have been time with his buddy but the only remedy for that was to start getting together now. “I deserve that.” He admitted at the playfully offensive nickname. “Last I had heard you had ditched just like me, when I came back ya’d think Josh, Maria, or David would have said something but they’re too busy being stuffed shirts I guess.” He did love his siblings but that wasn’t going to stop him from tacking harmless jabs at the three of them. “Mar I get, she’s a bit outside of town and Dave is busy with his wife, they’re expecting, but Josh shoulda brought it up.” Of course, if Abel had asked first that might have changed things. “Ah well, we know know.” He chirped with a smile, determined to get together with the other now that they had reunited.

A grimace flashed briefly over his features at the question towards his parents but he answered anyway, shrugging as he did. “Bullshit stuff, they want me to find a nice girl… settle down. do something, they say.” He felt like had had done a lot but because he wasn’t married it didn’t matter. Ugh. He wanted to make them happy but at what cost?

With permission, he picked up the SIG and examined it, noticing the difference in weight between it and his own weapon. “Yeah? What’s the biggest you got?” The question came out of curiosity as he dropped the clip from the gun in his hands. Another shrug. “A bit, I guess. It’s not too bad though and I like the solidity. Plus, easy to clean.” Keeping guns clean was essential to their functioning so an easy to clean weapon was nice. “Mmhmm, Omega. Go ahead and test it out.” Abel had lighter ones locked in his gun safe at home but he liked the omega. “So, you still get into trouble now and again or has that badge turned you into a goodie goodie?” He was aware of the injury based on what he could see but that didn’t mean Colt couldn’t have any fun did it?

"Yea? Well pass on my congrats, then." He didn't comment on Mar, but the thought of Abel's twin did bring a slight smile to his face. Now that had been one hell of a missed opportunity, but he had valued Abel's friendship something fierce and passed on that chance out of respect for his friend. Oh well. What was in the past couldn't be changed. Abel went on to mention that his parent's had been pushing for him to settle down and tie the knot, and Colt replied to this with a bit of a chuckle, "You and me both, then. Mom seems to think I need someone at home, pretty sure she's just worried about me being on my own..." He was practiced enough with weapons to hold a conversation and give the Omgea a good look over, "She's even set me up on some of those blind dates-- I sware lately she think's she's a match maker 'er something. My advice is don't let your mom find out or else they'll probably try setting them up on you, too."

He carefully set the Omega's magazine down and pulled back the slide to get a top-view, shaking the loaded bullet out into his palm if Abel had had one in the chamber-- his had. Better safe than sorry, right? "You remember that Lacy May girl?" He glanced up for a moment, "The one one class between us?" Lacy May had been a friend-of-a-friend type acquaintance back in their school days. There was probably nothing overly memorable about her except for her platinum, nearly-white blonde hair that was always pulled back into a hi-top ponytail.

He let the question dangle before shaking his head at the Omega, "I don't even know, I've got a Mosin, I haven't fired that in, pft, years, Springfield, some side-by-side's." He glanced up, "Anyone breaks in better kill me first, is all I'll say on that." He looked down to the gun and turned it over in his hands, considering taking Abel up on his offer of testing it out until the man asked if he had turned into a goodie-goodie. Colt looked up with a dumb grin, "Heh, me? Goodie Goodie? No." Again he shook his head, then shifted his weight as he carefully placed Abel's gun on the counter top, "Not in nearly as much trouble as I'd like these days.... If I weren't at home getting blitzed out of my skull on my nights off I might go out and find some trouble."

Abel hadn’t remembered Colt’s interest in his sister until after he had already mentioned her. That had been an interesting time but he was still appreciative that his friend had enough respect for him and their friendship to not make a move on his sister. Not that Abel had foreseen disaster between the two of them but problems occurred in most relationships and he hadn’t wanted to lose his relationship with Colt because of issues with Mar. Besides that, Abel had been, and still was overly protective of his twin. He wasn’t overly crazy about her husband either but there wasn’t a whole lot he could do about it having been away when they met.

All of Abel’s siblings were married, a fact that wasn’t helping his issue with his parents but David’s marriage was the one that was really damaging his case against them. “She's even set me up on some of those blind dates-- I sware lately she think's she's a match maker 'er something. My advice is don't let your mom find out or else they'll probably try setting them up on you, too” Colton shared in his pain and the words pulled a dreading groan from the ex-seal. He knew Colt was right about their mother’s trying to play match maker. “Seriously, I bet they’d love that little project though.” The idea was incredibly haunting. “I mean, I don’t even know that I want a girl.” If Colt didn’t know Abel was bisexual beforehand he did now. “Mom doesn’t know that, she’d probably send my ass to church camp if she did.” He was religious too but not to the same extent that his mother was.

“Lacy May? Was she the one with that white hair?” It probably wasn’t white, but as far as he cared it was. “I remember her some. High school seems like ages ago. Shits crazy.”

Abel had basically disassembled the weapon he had been looking at without realizing he’d done it, it was just a habit by now to strip them down and put them back together as quickly as possible without error. “Anyone breaks in better kill me first, is all I'll say on that.” He chuckled. “I’ll second that.” He added with a broad grin. “Not in nearly as much trouble as I'd like these days.... If I weren't at home getting blitzed out of my skull on my nights off I might go out and find some trouble.” Getting blitzed didn’t sound too bad either but Abel liked to drink more with other people around. “I’d be willing to help you find said trouble if you’re up for it some time.” He was trying to find out Colt’s limits with his leg without rudely calling attention to it.

"I don't even know that I want a girl." The words hardly seemed to effect Colton although he head heard them clearly over the sound of muffled gunfire from the range, such news had never effected him. Hell, put enough drinks or medication in him and Colt would probably be pretty happy with swinging any direction, to be honest. It'd been awhile, sure, but even before that. There were a few hazy nights back in his academy days that Colton woke up pretty sore in places he'd rather not admit after a night of heavy partying. Sober though? He preferred the ladies. He grinned when Abel mentioned his mother would have sent him off to church camp, "I can just see it now, her, dragging you down to the altar now and dousing you in holy oil." Like Abel, Colt wasn't exactly as religious as the generation that had raised him. His mother had stuffed all her kids in their Sunday best every Sunday, force-combed their hair in some cases and just about strangled them with bow ties while they had been growing up. Eventually Colt had got away from it, but lately his mother had been trying to pull him back again.

“I remember her some. High school seems like ages ago. Shits crazy.” Colton gave a short, sigh-filled laugh, "Man, Lacy May is crazy. She's got some issues.. . Pretty on the outside but...that girl is just, urf, ugly on the inside, I guess is a good way to put it." He shrugged one shoulder and turned his attention back down to the guns- namely his, which was now in pieces. This made him grin again and pointed at it, "I'm going to let you put that back together." He had every bit of faith that Abel could do just that without screwing anything up. He was a damned Seal, right? Or something like that. "Yeah?" He looked up and once more shifted, now putting his weight on the cane as he brought his right foot up behind him slightly resting the toe of his shoe on the ground, "I'll take you up on that. " If Abel had flat out asked his limits, Colton probably would have said nothing...mean, aside from skiing.... running...uh, bike riding. . . .most water sports.... all sports. You get the idea.

"I've got a pretty open schedule the rest of this week." Every so often he took time off to himself, and usually it was classified under medical leave, so there wasn't much that could be done about it. Brace had it's perks sometimes.

Sexuality wasn’t as big of a deal now as it had been for his parent’s generation and while he was careful to not bring it up around his mother and father that he was interested in men as well as women he didn’t have much filter for it with other people. He didn’t expect Colt to judge him for what he had said for several reasons but the main reason being that they had been friends for long enough for something so trivial to not be an issue. The lack of reaction to Abel’s outing himself was exactly what he anticipated. Colt had moved right on to painting a picture of Abel’s mother dousing him in holy oil on the church altar and Abel had a good laugh at that. “That’s ma alright! ‘M sure your mom’d be right there helping with the oil too.” The two mothers had been quite an intimidating pair when he and Colt were younger and he was sure they were both still as feisty when there was need to be.

“Man, Lacy May is crazy. She's got some issues.. . Pretty on the outside but...that girl is just, urf, ugly on the inside, I guess is a good way to put it.” Another good laugh was had at those words. “Aren’t they all?” He was joking, of course, because he knew that not all women were unstable but the comment fit in his mind. Granted, a significant amount of the crazy women in Abel’s life were crazy because of the stupid shit he had done, but he wasn’t going to point that out.

When Colt commented about letting Abel put the gun back together he made a cringe face and sucked in a bit of air in an expression of faux guilt. “I don’t know how.” Was Colt buying it? Even a little? No? Okay, he’d put it back together then. “I have a couple other shifts here this week and I’ve got some shit to do for the house, but I’ll make time to shake up this sleepy town with ya.” He had always loved the high jinx that he and Colt got into. “Maybe dinner and some drinks to start and see where the night goes from there…. And done.” He held up the gun on a flat palm completely reassembled.

Colton was thinking something along the same lines about their mothers. He then wondered if the two women were as closely in touch as they were back in the day- why hadn't his own mother told him Abel was back? She probably wasn't even thinking about it, so busy trying to set Colton up every chance she got.

When Abel faked ignorance, Colt gave him a bit of a look. "Psh." He didn't buy it at all.

Starting the night off with dinner and some drinks- that sounded like a plan. When Abel presented the gun Colt tilted his head back as he reached down to take it, "Shit was that even a full minute?" It wasn't like it was amazingly hard to reassemble, so long as one was in practice of it. "Damn...well," He looked his gun over before returning it to the case. Since all weapons had to be in a case for entry and exit of the gun range, Colt had worn his kytex holster empty. He'd likely put the gun on his person before getting back into his car.

He shifted uncomfortably and attempted to hide a wince as he did so, he'd been on his feet for a few hours now and it was starting to get painful. He had physical therapy tomorrow--- man he was not looking forward to that. Best he be along his way and get the rest while he could. "I should head out, though. I need to get some food and pain meds in me pretty soon." He knew he couldn't take 'the good stuff' while driving. It was too risky.

Did he want someone else to end up like he was? No. No he didn't.

Back in their youth the two men had been practically inseparable and gotten into a good bit of trouble. Nothing that had landed them with a record or Colt probably wouldn’t have been able to get into the line of work that he was in but either way they had shaken things up a bit. Even if they managed avoiding getting a record they had been brought home by the well-intending cops a time or two; the pair had a reputation to uphold.

Abel remembered their school days fondly and was looking forward to recreating them even if they’d have to be a bit more careful now that they were legally adults. He had promised to help Colt find some trouble and he was going to make good on that and he was going to do it soon. They had traded their weapons back to the rightful owners and Colt admitted that he should be heading out. Abel painted on a very convincing pouty face but perked back up quickly. “Well, I’ll hit ya up and we can make plans for one night this week.” He said again with a nod as if that solidified the agreement. He wasn’t going to try and keep the other there and risk him being in pain from a lack of meds, besides they’d meet up again soon.

"Great, I'll look forward to it." It would give him something to think about while at therapy the next day. There was an undeniably smile on his face regardless of the pain he currently felt. "Alright, see you around Abel."

There was nothing more to it! Colton would have loved to hang around and take up Abel's time if he had nothing better to do while waiting on customers to come and go, but his body said otherwise. It said--- medicate me, now, or else.

Shifting his footing Colt picked the case up with his left hand and started his walk towards the door. He had come into the gun range in quite the bad mood, but now he was leaving in one that was much better. It was a nice change of pace.

Just as Colt reached the door it swung open outwardly and another patron made an abrupt stop, seeing Colton standing there before it was too late. The other man politely stepped back and Colton thanked him on his way out, half-turning to give Abel a short two finger check-wave before he was out of sight. Abel's next customer entered with a friendly smile and a large rifle case in their hands.
