Sometimes, Lenny was amazed at Kyler's ability to pre plan. He'd never have thought to order breakfast the night before and food was something fairly high on Lenny's priorities. He broke into a smile, appreciative of the gesture. He'd come to notice that food wasn't something Kyler cared about as much as he did, so it was fairly obvious that the ordering was with him in mind, rather than his boyfriend thinking of himself.

Clothes, though, Kyler's infatuation with them bordered on obsession. Lenny had no problem with it - it meant there were plenty of nice clothes to go around. He wasn't so eager that he'd overlook food for them, though.

He made a sound of surprise when Kyler pulled him up off his seat, flailing out at his plate that contained his breakfast sub and clamping down onto it like his life depended on it.

"My food!" he managed to get out as he stumbled after Kyler, but he also managed to keep the plate upright and the food from going all over the very white furnishings. He was hungry, damnit! They'd already been through a lot that morning.

Satisfied his food was safe, he let Kyler tug him along to the closet-room. Kyler's intentions finally dawned on Lenny and with them, a sense of dread. It wasn't dread at being dressed, it was dread at being dressed up.

"Uhhh...." he stared at the door of the walk in wardrobe with round eyes as they neared it, brain stuttering, "Uh... I didn't bring many clothes..." Which was a negated point considering Kyler's collection, but it was all Lenny could come up with. "I guess... I... Could borrow a nice sweater or something?" he tried to divert Kyler's attention, all the while determining in his mind that he was not wearing a suit or a tie or even a dress shirt because - no! He hated all those things, always had since his parents had tried to force him into them to attend dinners and parties when he was growing up.

He stood in the middle of the room, surrounded by clothes but with a look in his eyes like he was surrounded by wolves, clutching his plate of breakfast tightly in his hands, and looked to Kyler in hopes that maybe he wouldn't pick all the things Lenny was dreading he might.

Lenny's passion for food might have rivaled how Kyler felt about clothes. That would almost always work to break him out of a funky mood and his apprehension about going to dinner with his parents was immediately shattered over the realization that he would get to dress his boyfriend too. Oh, he had ideas for this. As he excitedly pulled Lenny towards he was vaguely aware of the other scrambling after his food, trying to keep it safe and close by. Kyler was on a mission!

"Uhhh…. Uh… I didn't bring many clothes…" Lenny had said as they moved inside the closet. Kyler gave him a look, a cross between curiosity and disapproval, like they weren't standing and freaking bedroom sized closet. "I guess… I… Could borrow a nice sweater or something?" Kyler had already begun pulling pieces from their spots on the shelves and slinging them over his arm for consideration.

It took a solid minute for Lenny's words to penetrate his concentration on the clothes before what his boyfriend said had really clicked with him. A nice sweater or something. Lenny was trying to gear him in the direction of less fancy because he didn't want fancy. The blonde could recall their earlier shopping trip to Trudy's and how picky the other had been about things being to tight around his neck or itchy or whatever other complaint he had at the time. He placed the things he had already collected onto the ottoman in the center of the room and eyed Lenny, who was clutching his plate like it was a lifeline. Sometimes he forgot that not everyone had his history and wasn't used to being just shoved into whatever outfit and told to pose, he hadn't had much say in those outfits.

He paused for a thoughtful breath. "I'll probably wear a button up." He started, carefully gauging the other's reaction to the style of shirt he had chosen. "But… I could find a nice sweater for you if you let me pick a color." Lenny was already taking a big step by agreeing to meet his parents so he figured he could take it a little easy on the clothes, right?

Lenny's attempt at claiming he hadn't brought many clothes predictably was ignored and all Lenny could do was watch Kyler flit about the walk in closet, gathering items at a breakneck speed. While at first Lenny had mostly been worried about what he might be forced into, soon he was more in awe at the speed with which Kyler went through clothes, and the amount of clothes he was pulling out. Lenny's eyebrows rose as he watched Kyler. Soon enough, though, he was focussing on what Kyler was picking out rather than the speed, and his gaze returned to his plate at the appearance of button ups. He picked at his food, his jaw already set in defiance despite no choice being made. He was already expecting, assuming.

It wasn't as if he hadn't been through a similar process before. It all reminded him of growing up. Parties, family occasions, even photographs had all required states of dress that Lenny disliked. While very young resorting to bribery if he wore a particular item often worked, but as he grew older, his stubbornness grew too and no promises of gelato or warnings of not being taken to the beach would get Lenny any nearer to wearing a suit. They usually got him nearer to throwing a tantrum, most occasions ending with tears on both his and his mothers part, and as he was older, raised voiced on both his and his father's. The issue became less about Lenny not liking the particular clothes and more about Lenny refusing to wear anything his parents had especially picked out, unwilling to give in, as he saw it.

The way Kyler was picking through his clothes gave a familiar feeling, one that almost left Lenny feeling a little sick in his stomach. Then Kyler mentioned it - a button up. Just two simple words and Lenny's blood was like ice in his veins as he immediately assumed Kyler wearing a button up would mean he would be too. Kyler could have told Lenny that he was going to take him outside and shoot him and Lenny's expression couldn't have looked any more mortified. While he thought he hid things well, Lenny's thoughts were written all over his face and in his wide eyes. He couldn't even speak at first, his mouth simply falling open in terror.

Then the horrifying words were followed up by, "But… I could find a nice sweater for you if you let me pick a color.""

Lenny's mouth stayed hanging open until he eventually closed it, blinking at Kyler while he processed what his boyfriend had just offered.

"I..uh.." it took a moment for his brain to switch from being prepared to fight into acceptance, Lenny letting out an audible sigh of relief and smiling, "Yeah. That.. that sounds great!" he nodded, still smiling, though ducking his head slightly, embarrassed at how relieved he was. He chuckled. "As long as it's not like.. orange or something." Lenny might not have had the finest taste, but even he knew that turning up to an evening dinner in a bright orange sweater would be out of place and inappropriate.

He took a bite from his sub, a proper bite this time, chewing away happily. He stepped forward, obviously wanting to be more of an active part of what they were doing, watching with more invested interest. "What kind of sweater are you thinking?" he asked, genuinely interested rather than suspicious.

Image and the importance of it had been bred into Kyler since he had been able to walk. It had never something taken lightly in the eyes of Mr. Landen and, with all that weight attached to it, Kyler took it just as seriously. It was why he was so against Lenny's sweatpants out of the bedroom and why he put so much time and energy into his morning routine. There had never been an instance where he had gone out into public without being perfectly presentable. Even as a child keeping himself neat and clean was a top priority. Clothes just came with the territory. So many expensive clothes lining the racks and drawers are the closet around them, each with their own high end labels. The contents of the room was worth a small fortune in itself, not that he was looking to sell any of it.

No. His clothes were far to important to consider getting rid of them. He had a knack for fashion well before becoming a model and getting into that career had only helped to expand his interest and wardrobe. He had a surprisingly accurate mental catalogue of what and where everything was in the room too, so of course, he was grabbing things with surprising speed. This was totally his forte. However, he was getting pretty good at understanding Lenny too, well enough that he had caught on to what his boyfriend was trying to do.

Fine, he could negotiate if it meant he still got something his way. He didn't understand Lenny's peculiar dislikes in clothes but he had seen it at Trudy's. He also knew the other liked darker colors, so, if Lenny could bend on the color Ky could on the buttons.

The suggestion had left Lenny's mouth agape and that made Ky smile a bit, amused that the compromise before the argument had caught his boyfriend so off guard, there had even been a sigh of relief. Lenny agreed as long as he hadn't picked something 'orange or something' and Ky gave a playful roll of his eyes. He might have suggested orange but not seriously, because seriously his dad took that image thing way to serious. "What kind of sweater are you thinking?" He was pleased with his boyfriend's newfound interest in this endeavor and clapped his hands together. "I dunno, I really like the red on you." He really did too, maybe it was that Lenny was a little pale or his dark hair but red just set off his features and Ky liked it. "But maybe I'll put you in something new." He looked around for a moment. "Don't worry, I know noting to itchy or tight… If you see anything you like you can grab it." Because that was half the fun wasn't it?

Lenny broke into a smile, one both slightly teasing and slightly bashful, when Kyler said he liked red on him. The comment made Lenny glance down at what he was wearing while he imagined the colour in himself. He had nothing against red, he just tended to pick out dark and muted colours reflexively, attracted to them.

"Really?" he glanced back up to Kyler, trusting his boyfriends opinion enough to be considering the colour. Lenny already looked to Kyler as more knowledgable than him on many things, seeking his guidance or happy to let Kyler have control, but clothes were still another matter. It was mostly Kyler's specialist interest in fashion that overcame Lenny's usual stubbornness when it came to clothes and had him even considering Kyler's opinions, let alone trying on clothes, at all. Enjoying the attention he received and his boyfriend finding him attractive definitely helped too.

"Or you mean, you like my red underwear on me?" he teased back, chuckling and biting at his bottom lip.

He moved next to a rack of clothes as he spoke, eyes poring over the garments as he ate his food. Soon enough, Lenny was engrossed in looking at the different items Kyler had. He got easily distracted looking at the more outrageous or brash articles of clothing, staring at some of them in awe and forgetting his purpose for looking through the closet until he noticed a sweater he liked by chance and remembered. It was dark, what Lenny usually opted for and not anything like the red that Kyler was looking for, but it served as a good reminder. Lenny paused in front of it, considering, torn between liking it but knowing it wasn't red, and made a mental note of where it was before moving on. He cast a few longing glances back as he made his way through Kyler's wardrobe at first, but soon he was back to his task and the sweater was mostly forgotten

Lenny got so involved that he put down his plate on the ottoman in the centre of the room, not even finishing his food, licking any residual grease from his fingers before diving back into the task of looking through the clothes. He'd managed to get through a good portion of the wardrobe without selecting anything out before he stopped, making a noise of surprise.

"What about this?" he turned to Kyler, stepping aside and holding up the arm of the sweater. It was forest green, so not the brightest, but in Lenny's favour, it at least it wasn't black or grey.

Lenny's eyes were already scanning the clothes on the next hangers. Looking through the closet reminded him of shopping and he was almost enjoying it, though the pressure of keeping Kyler cheered up was a constant in his mind. It was also a happy distraction from the evening that awaited them both.

So was the next day and the thought of having Kyler all to himself. Lenny picked out the rich green sweater and headed over to Kyler's side, "Hey, we could go shopping tomorrow? We could get bagels or something and head to fifth avenue." Kyler loved shopping and Lenny was starting to find he loved shopping with Kyler for more than just getting to see Kyler happy, and even Lenny appreciated fifth avenue. Most things felt what Lenny considered 'nice' and fit 'nice', though of course they came with a nice big price tag too. "Or Soho." he tagged on, his thoughts beginning to drift. He was looking forward to the following day but first they had to get through an evening with Kyler's parents. The thought had Lenny's smile fading without him even realising it, his movements losing their bounce and vibrancy, the nervousness he felt feeding into a tenseness that was visible in his body.

He stared down at the sweater in his hands, keeping his gaze averted from Kyler. His thoughts were drawn to the way Kyler's mother had reacted to him, already imagining a similar reaction from Kyler's dad. Was it the kind of sweater someone who a parent might like would wear? The more he thought about it, the more he was dreading what the evening would bring. He wanted to stay home but he also wanted to support Kyler and he couldn't do both.

"You think your dad'll like me?" he said suddenly, still fidgeting with the sweater in his hands rather than looking at Kyler, unable not to voice his anxieties.

Ky was starting to figure things out with Lenny. With his boyfriend it was important to approach the subject calmly, not competitively, and it resulted in a more agreeable conversation. Granted, he was not always in such control of his emotions and if he was mad then a brash reaction from him would be much more common. Right now though? Right now he was trying to contemplate the impending evening with his parents and he wasn't looking for a fight so calm was best. Besides that, he knew he wanted Lenny to go and was trying to make it as easy a day as possible. He though the was doing pretty good with that part too, at least he was for right now.

After he had verbalized his thoughts on the color he though Lenny should wear Lenny came back with a comment about the red underwear and Ky just smiled at him. "I like those too." He commented back, knowing exactly the pair he had been referencing. His gaze had lingered on the other for a few more moment before returning to the span of clothing along the walls, determined to find the perfect thing. "What about this?" He looked over to see Lenny holding the sleeve a dark green sweater and gave a little nod. "Maybe. Try it on." At least it wasn't as dark as his normal tops. He kept scanning the items, favoring a sweater he had only worn a handful of times. The material wasn't horribly bright but it was still a nice shade of red, his only concern was that it wasn't as low of a neck. Making a face he moved on, green wouldn't be so bad if he couldn't find a red that they both liked.

"Hey, we could go shopping tomorrow? We could get bagels or something and head to fifth avenue. Or Soho." A smile spread across his lips at the suggestion. They hadn't been shopping together since they got kicked out of Trudy's and they were well overdue for it in Ky's opinion. "That would be perfect! A little retail therapy is always good… We probably shouldn't shop for underwear though." He gave Lenny a look over his shoulder, a little flirty smile. Abandoning the section he had been browsing he moved to where Lenny was, glancing first at the sweater in his arms and then at his boyfriend. He had intentions of flirting a bit more but Lenny's mind was clearly elsewhere. "Do you think your dad'll like me?"

It was a heavy question, weighted with worry about disapproval. Ky took a slow breath, his mind already trying to put together a reassuring reply that would put his boyfriend's mind at ease. The only problem was that he honestly didn't know. His dad had never met any of his friends other than Tony and even still he could have counted their interactions on one hand. Kyler wasn't even all that positive how his father felt about his best friend either. He didn't say any of that though, choosing instead to smile softly at Lenny. "He would be crazy not to." Because he honestly did believe that, he reinforced his words with a kiss to Lenny's lips before taking the sweater from his boyfriend and holding it up against the other's chest. "I think this will be perfect for tonight." He was trying to keep Lenny positive about what was coming.

Kyler's comforting worked perfectly. Lenny relaxed into the kiss, letting his eyes close and letting out a small sigh of relief, smiling back at his boyfriend. Kyler had said exactly what Lenny needed to hear and with such certainty, regardless of whether it might be true, that Lenny easily believed it. He smiled, cheeks slightly flushed, and hummed in agreement. He kissed Kyler and reached for his hand to give it a squeeze before glancing down to the sweater held against his chest.

"Then I'll wear this." he was still smiling, enjoying Kyler's presence, his closeness.

He stepped very slightly away to pull the sweater on, trying it for size. When it was on he stepped closer to Kyler again, pulling him into an embrace. The sweater felt okay enough that Lenny didn't even bother to look in a mirror. His kind was already on other things.

"It fits great. I like it..." he pressed a kiss to Kyler's mouth, "And... Maybe we can make time for underwear shopping... But, at the end this time..." he smirked, flashing his teeth, and leaned in for a deeper kiss.

-

The dinner had gone surprisingly well. Surprisingly, because Lenny had spent most of the day working himself up about it again while Kyler worked, the squeeze of his boyfriend's hand in his not nearly enough comfort against the waves of anxiety that hit him as they neared the restaurant. And yet... They'd managed to get through the ordeal mostly unscathed. There were one or two times Lenny wondered if he was being snubbed, but for the most part the attention of Kyler's parents was on Kyler, and Kyler rose to the occasion, perhaps being the most sensible and mature Lenny had even seen him. It meant Lenny was left to listen and enjoy the food, which was unbelievably tasty, while he wondered how he'd lucked out so much. The coldest part of the meal was the comments Kyler managed to sneak in about his sister whenever they occasion arose. Amazingly still, questions about Lenny's past were blessedly few and far between. By the end of the meal, Lenny was actually close to enjoying himself.

After the dinner, rather than escaping back to Kyler's and having his boyfriend to himself, Kyler's parents insisted they join them at their house. Lulled into a sense of security by the amiableness of the evening, Lenny didn't even mind too much.

The place wasn't huge, but was noticeably tastefully decorated and the Landons had a butler to serve the drinks as everyone settled down onto couches around a hearth. Lenny sat as close to Kyler without being indecent, happily reaching out for a champagne flute when one was offered. He smiled at Kyler, squeezing his thigh. Even the presence of Kyler's nephew hadn't dampened Lenny's mood.

What had been worrying about all day? The evening hadn't been that bad at all. It had actually been good!

Lenny had not been the only one stressing how the evening would go, Kyler was just trying to keep his worries as buttoned down as possible because he knew what would happen the second he let his panic slip. If he had shown any doubt about his parents accepting Lenny then he was almost positive that his boyfriend would want to bail out on the plans and while he might not have minded if that had been the agreement to begin with the blonde had started to like the idea of getting to see his father and have a nice meal with the family as the tradition had been so many years ago. Of course, he had no way of guaranteeing that his parents, specifically his father, would like Lenny but he had no reason to anticipate that they wouldn't get along.

Dinner had taken its time in getting there but once the time had arrived, the meal came and went without incident. It was better than what he had expected after having made himself so anxious throughout the day. The meal itself was fine, he had Lenny's company which made him feel a bit better despite all the questions he had been left fielding by his parents and no one had pried too much into Lenny's life; the possibility of that had been daunting enough because of how Lenny had reacted when Ky asked. His parents made an acceptable effort to incorporate his boyfriend into the mix of things and even if it wasn't the most valiant effort it would do for the first meeting considering there was a lot he still didn't know about the other man.

Afterwards, he had been looking forward to getting back to the apartment and snuggling up close to his boyfriend in celebration of surviving the night. The only issue being that his parent were not ready to let the night end, insisting on having the pair over to their home for further conversation. Everything had gone so well that Kyler was reluctant to accept because he didn't want to get to the point of having 'too much of a good thing' but ended up giving in.

So, there they were sitting in the living room of his parent's house with Lenny closely by his side and his mother across from them on another sofa. His father had excused himself from the moment they had walked inside but he wasn't questioning it because of how busy he remembered the man being. Julia was seated in a chair nearby with her son flitting about between her and his grandmother; Ky cared little to interact with the kid.

He had accepted a drink when it was offered and took a small sip while his mother gabbed about one of the neighbors. "No, you're thinking of the people two houses down on the left not the right." Julia corrected but their mother simply waved the advice away. "Regardless, I would think someone in this neighborhood would have more couth than that." She finished her story with a shake of her head. "I know my children would never behave that way." She beamed at Kyler and then Julia. Ky managed a weak smile back and covering Lenny's hand on his leg.

Kyler had been moments away from uttering a response when his father returned. The man's presence had always demanded a certain level of respect but he seemed less inviting than he had been at dinner and carried with him a small stack of papers clutched underneath a cell phone in one hand. He didn't bother seating himself and remained standing at the edge of the couch Ky and Lenny were on, facing them. Kyler had given his father a curious look. "Leonardo Gianni Neroni." Ky's brows furrowed as he recognized his boyfriend's full name. "Dad w-" He was cutoff as his father spoke up again. "I knew I recognized that face, it's just like your mother's." His words and gruff tone were for Lenny. "But I thought that couldn't be right, I know the Neroni's and they have one son and here I stand corrected. A second," he gestured to the only brunette in the room. "Why have I not heard of you?" Ky's hand curled tighter around Lenny's, this was precisely what he had been afraid of.

Throughout the span of the evening, Lenny's quiet nervousness had been replaced by a quiet contentment. He didn't care for small talk or gossip but he was perfectly happy to just sit next to Kyler, half listening but mostly taking the family in, watching, getting to know their personalities. He wasn't paying attention to what was being said. He could care less about someone living down the street, but he was hopeful to leave a good impression on Kyler's parents. The opposite ran the risk of tainting Kyler's opinion of Lenny, maybe listening to any disapproval. Still, the evening had gone well, surprisingly so to Lenny. He'd been expecting it to be much more tense. It had actually been remarkably easy.

It was this false sense of security that meant Lenny failed to notice the change in demeanour of Kyler's father when he walked back in. He was too busy watching Kyler, smiling. It wasn't until the man was standing in front of the couch Lenny and Kyler were on that Lenny noticed Kyler's gaze shift and looked to his dad too.

The name was a shock, had Lenny blinking in alarm, eyes widening and heartbeat thumping away in his chest. All sorts of questions were running through his head. How did he know Lenny's parents? Had he been told about Lenny? His gaze darted to Kyler, checking how his boyfriend had reacted. Talking about family was exactly what Lenny had been avoiding with Kyler. It was like Lenny's worst nightmare, but then Kyler's dad followed up with not having heard about Lenny and Lenny couldn't have been more relieved. If he hadn't heard of Lenny, that was perfect, because if he had Lenny doubted he'd have heard much positive from his family. Not knowing meant a blank slate.

Lenny relaxed again. He was starting to notice the change in Kyler's father's demeanour, frowning slightly, but brushed it off, sure that the man didn't know about his past and might just be tired, or simply like that all the time. It didn't occur to Lenny how the man might know who he was, including his full name, if he didn't know anything about him. He just smiled, somewhat nervously, coughing to clear his throat as he tried to think up a good reason why his name might never have come up.

"Um...." the gaze Kyler's father had set on him was more than a hit intimidating, making Lenny shift against Kyler. He suddenly noticed that both Kyler's mother and sister were also staring at him too. "Um, I, uh... I guess maybe because, um, I don't live in the city anymore." he answered, following up with a weak smile and hoping the answer would be enough. With all eyes on him it almost felt as if he were on trial for some wrong he didn't even know he'd committed.

However well the night had started it didn't take Ky any time at all to realize by his dad's tone that good time was coming to an abrupt halt. Lenny wasn't as quick to catch on but he had only just met the man Ky had known his whole life. The second he had heard Lenny's full name spill out in that brisk tone the blonde had grown a little more tense, but he didn't react much beyond that because he didn't know what Lenny would do or say and he didn't want to point out trouble if his boyfriend hadn't caught on to it. After a cough and a a few uncertain sounds Lenny dismissed the issue by saying he didn't live in town anymore.

Kyler knew that answer wouldn't be enough, he knew his dad was going somewhere with his questioning and this was the beginning of something he probably wouldn't want to see. Even knowing that wasn't enough to break him from his frozen stare, he could do nothing but watch his dad staring down his boyfriend in that scrutinous way. "No, I think you're lying." Mr. Landon said, gaze unwavering from Lenny. "I think it has more to do with this." The papers he had were tossed in Lenny's lap, the top face up to reveal the cover of what looked to be a very detailed person report. He was still talking, leaving no space for anyone to interject. "Assault, disorderly conduct, vandalism, all shining stars on your criminal record which pair so well with being a high school drop out and a party boy." Now he had paused, a dark expression on his face while he looked over the pair.

Ky's expression had turned to shock and his hazel eyes had focused on Lenny for a second. Stunned was an understatement. He knew his father had no reason to liye and very obvious proof of his accusations but he couldn't believe it and was struggling to wrap his mind around the possibility of Lenny, his Lenny, having anything like that on his record. His dad picked up again. "I bet your parents are ashamed, bet they disowned you and forced you out so now you're here. A gold digger, just trying to sink his claws into my son..."

"No, I think you're lying."

Lenny's gaze snapped up immediately. He stared at Kyler's father, a sense of dread fast infiltrating his body. His gaze dropped to the papers deposited on his lap, realising what it was as the more unsavoury parts were being listed out to him - and Kyler.

He'd been so wrong when he'd thought his previous answer would be enough. So wrong.

His mouth gaped open, eyes open wide in shock as he struggled to process what was happening, staring at Kyler's father. How did he know? Why did he know?

Worst of all was the last accusation he flung at Lenny. Golddigger.

"I.. what, that's not true!" Lenny protested, shaking his head. He hasn't even known Kyler had money when they first met.

He was scared to look at Kyler, and besides, with Kyler's father standing right in front of him it was difficult to look at anything else. It was chilling to think what Kyler would think of him. All the things Kyler's father had just revealed were things Lenny has avoided talking about because he didn't want Kyler to think any less of him. He thought he'd left being plagued by the things he'd done and subsequent bad reputation behind.

He spluttered, slightly, almost choking on his words.

"And I wasn't even charged for most of that stuff.. " That at least was true - he might have been guilty of them, but his father had seen to the charges being dropped, "and.. and... how.. how do you even know? How the fuck do you know all this?!"

He grabbed the sheath of papers off his lap and jabbed at them with his other hand.

The whole time, there was a voice in the back of his mind. Kyler was going to hate him now he knew. Kyler was going to dump him and probably never want to see him again. He might even believe the accusation that Lenny was a golddigger on top of it all.
