Sitting on the large brown sofa, Blake ran her finger tips up and down the soft leather surface. It was smooth. One reason Leeloo wasn’t allowed on furniture outside of Blake’s bedroom. Currently the orange and white cat was happily sprawled out on a sunbeam in that room, but she didn’t know what was coming. Blake wasn’t entirely sure what was coming. He didn’t say anything about being upset, but his answers were short. Of course it was possible that he was just tired… and his messages weren’t always long but… no. She did not feel like she was reading too much into things. She wasn’t being overly critical. After last night, of course he was upset. He always seemed to recover so quickly, and she usually recovered quickly once she had something new to focus on. She just… felt worse.

It would be alright after today. She was not going to fight with him. They’d had that, and it was really painful. She was thinking about it all night, and that was the absolute worst. She felt much better than she had when Kiefer took her to her car, but she didn’t feel as good as she had when he’d picked her up. Maybe she was a trainwreck. “Hm.” That was possible.

You planning out the rest of your life, Blake?

Blake broke away from her thought process and looked over at Taylor. “What? No… I’m… doesn’t matter. Anyway, what’s up?

Nothing. Cris is making something to eat, she wants to know if you want anything.

Oh. No, I’m fine, thank you.” She flashed a smile to Taylor so that he would leave. She’d told them that her boyfriend was coming over, and asked to make sure that was alright. Taylor didn’t know anything about why Blake might be nervous about that, although they’d both seemed surprised by the information. Taylor was more surprised that Blake actually had a boyfriend, and Cristina, who at least knew about the guy before then, was surprised that after nearly two years living there, Blake was inviting a boy over to the house. Blake might have been a bit surprised too, but it was what she wanted to do.

She went back to tracing patterns from her mind onto the couch arm, holding onto her necklace with her other hand. She could see out the window to the front yard. It was a modest house, attic, basement, only one main floor. Garage. Blake’s car was parked out front past the mail box, so if Kiefer was at all uncertain about the house or the address, somehow, he would still have her car to tell him which was right.

He hadn't expected to hear from her so soon. After returning the girl dutifully to her vehicle, he'd gone back to see Celia. He'd spent the night in his old room, in his old bed. He'd wanted to show her. He had wanted to do a lot of things. It may not have been the most extensive of plans, but he had been looking forward to the excursions for weeks.
That night had been passed in excruciating contemplation. What had been the turning point? Seeing Celia had introduced tension. He shouldn't have gotten high. He shouldn't have told her all of that shit. He shouldn't have lost his composure.
The man had drifted in and out of sleep until sunrise, then slept soundly through to eleven, though he was certain he hadn't rested a minute. The message was on his phone when he roused. Hey, do you want to hang out today?
He read the text twice. His groggy mind could decide if this was the dream or if the night prior had been. It sounded suspiciously casual. Kiefer found his way downstairs and helped himself to a bowl of cereal as he contemplated. Celia was already awake, huddled into a compact corner of an overly spacious couch, legs curled beneath her as she read something he could only assume was riddled with big words and romantic gestures. Her greeting consisted of a distracted noise. Kiefer sat at the other end of the couch with his breakfast and munched numbly in the silence.
"Feel any better?" he wondered, voice rasping. She shrugged and shook her head without compromising her view of the page. That was clearly all the conversation she was interested in having. He finished his meal and rinsed the dish before leaving it in the sink. On his way to the door, he leaned over the back of the couch and placed a chaste kiss on her cheek.
"Love you, Ceec." She squeezed his hand without looking.

Blake's intention occupied his thoughts for the duration of his drive home. It nagged him as he showered and redressed. Nearly three hours had elapsed from its receipt when he replied.
always.
His phone chimed within minutes. Cool. Want to hang out at my place? For the second instance that morning, he was floored. This time, however, he recovered shortly.
yeah
She texted him her address, and he finished his preparations unhurriedly. The tenacious belief was that she was going to leave him. The irony that it would be his first and last time seeing her home was not lost on Kiefer. Details were solidified via a few more concise messages. He spoke with Kaleb at length before leaving. The man, convinced of his fate, was in no rush to see her.

The house was located without complication. He parked on the street in front of her car and began the arduous journey up her driveway. He didn't want to do this, but he wouldn't fight her. His knock sounded hollow. Was it possible no one was home? If it weren't for her car, he might have convinced himself that he'd somehow ended up at the wrong house. A worthy excuse to give up and go home.
It was Blake, of course, who answered the door. He didn't want to see her face. His eyes fell instead upon his necklace. Consumed as he was with relief, the woman's greeting did not even take root in his consciousness. No words occurred to him. Instead, he pulled her close and held her.

She wasn’t reading too much into it, but she didn’t know that he had gone from upset to thinking that she was going to break up with him in the span of the night. Or was it just from her texts? She didn’t know what was going through his mind. She’d been up for hours. He wasn’t even texting her until after noon. She talked to her landlords only after he agreed. She didn’t want to ask them if he wasn’t even going to come. Being prepared was good, but putting herself out there wasn’t fun in increased doses. By the time Kiefer was actually supposed to get there, Taylor and Cristina had left to go buy groceries. They usually tried to do that Sunday because they put off certain chores until then. Taylor didn’t like doing anything on days he worked.

Thinking about her landlords was one way to pass the time. She’d made sure that her room was extra clean. She’d had time to stress clean. Putting everything away in a drawer. She had her necklaces hanging up on the wall, and the curtains were not drawn. Meaning the back yard was clearly visible outside. Leeloo preferred it that way. Blake had even made her bed, which she hardly even did when she changed the sheets. It didn’t really matter anyway, Leeloo didn’t care if the bed was made, and neither did Blake. She just had time and energy today.

For a guy that wanted to hang out with her “always” he sure took his time. While Blake was uncertain how she would word things if she had to text someone to break up with them, she wouldn’t have invited him to her house. That she knew. She would be doing the opposite. Fortunately for everyone, Blake’s mind was nowhere near breaking up. Finally Kiefer showed up. It only took forever, but he was finally there. Blake saw his car and watched him as much as she could before heading up to go to the door. He knocked, and she gave it maybe twenty seconds before she opened the door.

Hello, welcome,” she said, feeling a bit nervous, but not too badly. She would survive. Kiefer reached out and pulled Blake over to him and into his arms. She was confused, but perfectly happy to wrap her arms around him and stand there. Especially since she knew no one was in the house to walk over and make her feel awkward. “Hey. Nice to see you. You alright?

This embrace was reciprocated a great deal more than their last, and Kiefer felt his dread lessen. His relief was evident, but he was loathe to let her go regardless. Hey. Nice to see you. You alright? Kiefer nodded without releasing her. It was a long while before he did speak.
"Yeah, I think so." When they finally did break apart, the settling of emotions left him feeling strangely detached. Unmoving, he studied every inch of her for some sign of how to react.
"How are you?" It was an awkward exchange, standing uncertainly on her doorstep... A far cry from the nights they'd spent in bed together carelessly intertwined.
He stepped inside at her explicit welcome. The distraction that was his current tumultuous state did not stop him from absorbing the ambience. They walked directly through the open living room to a smaller room, enclosed by glass on all sides. His eyes wandered over each surface in turn.
All of this was hers. Her dresser, her jewelry, her bed, her... weird braided rug. It was nothing like he had imagined, but so complete in its Blake-ness that it felt somehow familiar. He sat absently on the bed, and his gaze fell automatically on their company. Leeloo. Shit. He'd meant to bring chips... Somehow the present circumstances didn't seem fitting.
Kiefer sat and waited for her to say something. All he could seem to do at the moment was sit and think and look. He did so stiffly, apprehensive and expectant.

When Blake asked if Kiefer was alright, he nodded. She didn’t feel very convinced. At least he felt good enough to say that he was alright, so she could appreciate that. Blake held onto him until he seemed ready to let go, and invited him inside. “How are you?

I’m good. Happy to see you,” she admitted. She was happy to see that he was alright. She would feel even better as time went on. Having a nice, relaxing, time with Kiefer did that. Sure, things were awkward right now, and it was definitely more tense than times she’d stayed in bed with him, but that was to be expected. The night before certainly hadn’t been very comfortable. She wasn’t going to let things go back to that though.

Blake took Kiefer into her bedroom. It wasn’t excessively decorated. The walls were basically all windows, which left limited privacy. It was good that there were trees and bushed in the back yard. No one could see into Blake’s room unless they were actually in the yard, but it still didn’t feel private. It would suffice for now. She’d gotten used to it, but there was rarely anyone else in the room with her. Blake closed the sliding glass door, which was covered with a large curtain as well. She had a lot of glass in her room. It made storms even worse for her. Blake nudged Leeloo gently with her foot, and the cat rolled onto her side, exposing her fluffy white belly to Blake’s idly rubbing. Soon Blake left her alone and went to sit on the bed next to Kiefer.

You still don’t seem alright…

Blake put a hand on Kiefer’s hand, “So… this is my room… I told you it had a lot of windows… but Leeloo likes it, so that’s the tradeoff. What do you think?” Her baseball mitt and a few pictures were up on her dressed around her jewelry boxes. She had a small bookshelf that came up nearly the height of her desk, which was against the desk and held various CD cases, two photo albums, and some books.

The night separating them had been the worst. He realized now that he had no clue what she had been thinking these past twenty four hours. In his consternation, he hadn't tried to reach out to her. It had seemed safer to wait. He hadn't expected the reconciliation to come this soon.
That had unnerved him: the sudden resolution, the general lack of acknowledgement for what had transpired. Seeing her had eased his worries, but he still felt small, like a chastised child, sitting as she stood, waiting for her to speak. To pronounce his fate.
She joined him on the bed after paying some small affection to Leeloo. The weight of her hand on his was reassuring. Kiefer smiled uncertainly when she looked to him. This was more like the Blake he knew. So… this is my room… I told you it had a lot of windows… but Leeloo likes it, so that’s the tradeoff. She asked him what he thought, and he glanced around to cement his opinion.
"I like it." The room itself was irrelevant. The fact that it was hers placed it firmly among his favorites. Kiefer moved so that their fingers could mesh. The apology was one which had been brewing, desperate to be heard, for some time.
"I'm sorry." Succinct... Nothing fancy, but it was earnest.

It wasn’t that big of a deal to show someone her room, or her cat. It really wasn’t. It was just something that Blake refused to do. No one deserved it. No one was close enough. Something like that. She didn’t think in those terms. It just wasn’t something that she did. It was all a matter of opening Kiefer up to things, not a matter of comparing him to the past. The fact that she was trying to do things for him, or with him, was to show that they weren’t sacred. And if they were, at least he could still be involved. She couldn’t recall if she’d ever said that she never brought anyone back to her place. She kind of assumed it was a given, but there were things that she took for granted that Kiefer definitely didn’t.

He said that he liked it, and Blake smiled. She was pleased. It was just a room. It wasn’t special. She might do more in another space. She would have to do more, but what exactly could she do without real walls? The small spaces between the windows were painted, but they were all covered together with the big curtains when she wanted some peace from the light. She wasn’t trying to shrug everything off, but she did want to cheer him up. “I’m sorry.

Oh. Or there was that. Blake squeezed his hand, his fingers were already meshed with hers. “What… I know yesterday but… what are you sorry for?” She wasn’t trying to poke. She wasn’t trying to get anything elaborate. The night before was conflict. It was all this blur of unpleasant feelings after a point. She wasn’t sure what exactly he was apologizing for. She just wanted to know. To be on the same page as him. She didn’t hold his concern against him. It was that which had swayed her so much after the fact. That fear for her, that she didn’t quite understand, but at the same time did understand. Did relate to. At least, in some ways. She couldn’t know that much since he hadn’t said much, but she understood some of that.

I’m sorry for worrying you… not just from before. But you seem really worn out right now,” she said, then sighed. She was serious and quiet. She cared about him a lot.

How either of them could not want to talk about what had happened was a mystery to him... and Kiefer was the poster child for avoidance. Things had fallen apart so spectacularly. It still pained him that she had chosen to leave.
So keen was her aversion that she couldn't even stand to be around him. Not even after the argument had ended. Her abject defeat when he had asked her to sit with him... I don't think that's a good idea. He had been confused; he had been disappointed, but mostly he had been hurt. The feeling of emptiness returned to a minor degree. What are you sorry for? His frown was immovable.
"I am sorry for upsetting you." Kiefer didn't regret his meaning... Mostly he was sorry for how it had affected her. "I really missed you last night." They'd spent plenty of evenings apart, but never in such unforgiving silence. Her absence had been felt in everything. I’m sorry for worrying you… not just from before. But you seem really worn out right now.
"I am," he allowed after a moment. He didn't need to tell her he had had trouble sleeping. It appeared that she had as well. His arms slipped around her slim frame again. He craved her touch more than anything. Kiefer closed his eyes and rested his chin on her shoulder.

How could Blake not want to talk about what had happened? Easy enough. She hated fights, she hated arguing, she hated all of that. Walking away was easier. It was calm. It didn’t keep you trapped in a moment of tension and conflict and judgment. The only person who could judge you when you walked away was you. You couldn’t escape your own eyes. She had not been in a good mood when she left, but at least she hadn’t had to feel his disappointment. Now it was back, but she could deal with it right now.

He was sorry for upsetting her. Right. Well, that wasn’t really an action, it was an effect, but sure. She’d take it. She nodded like she understood. He missed her that night. Yeah… it hadn’t been very fun. Of course she didn’t think he would break up with her over it, and she knew she wouldn’t do something like that. At worst she would need more time apart, but she’d given it less than twelve hours. It had taken longer to get him in the same building, but that part was not on her.

He was worn out, and she bit the inner edge of her lip. He held onto her again, his chin on her shoulder. She felt badly that he was tired, but she wasn’t sure how to help now. Other than a nap. Emotional fatigue was more her domain right now. She gently stroked the side of his face as he settled there. “I don’t ever want to make you feel like that… and I could have worded it better from the start, I think that might have at least helped…” Might have made him not seem to think she was contesting the point about not picking up drugs anymore, at least. Might have kept it from getting so bad she walked away from him. Might have meant the conversation took place the night before, and not now. It didn’t matter when it happened though, because it was all she was worried about right now. Blake kissed his forehead gently. She really cared about him, even though she wasn’t sure she could say it well. Her eyes were solemn and warm, so she blinked quickly a few times to calm down.

The man had driven here prepared to see the last of her. His gut was a tangle of conflicting emotion, but the feeling of her against him hushed his doubts. She shifted slightly within his grasp. Fingertips stroked him lovingly, his face turning unconsciously to her touch. Plump lips erased the creases from his forehead. His eyes remained closed, his arms hung loosely around her. I don’t ever want to make you feel like that… and I could have worded it better from the start, I think that might have at least helped…
"We'll both be better," he vowed somberly. His head hung low in remorse, he kissed her neck apologetically. There was nothing to say. He just wanted to hold her, here, like this for the foreseeable future. He had no where better to be, nothing more appealing to do. He'd never been more grateful, more content to live in the moment.
"I love you, Blake." He'd gotten used to the statement hanging there. There was no expectance. He wanted her to know. His throat was dry, clenched. He swallowed to relieve the ache. His breaths ebbed and flowed against her in soothing waves. His fingers traced the notches of her spine.

Kiefer was certainly an emotional man, and right now he was very vulnerable. Blake wasn’t sure what about her drew him this close, but she liked having him. It would do her well to be single right now. At best casually dating every so often was responsible for her time management. Instead of that, she’d gotten involved in Kiefer, and there was a lot of involvement. He crossed her mind when they weren’t texting, which was just about always, and she saw him about as many nights a week as she didn’t. Beyond the time, and the thoughts, her feelings were invested in him. She wanted to say more, but she just wasn’t sure if it was right.

They’d both do better. He kissed her neck. His actions were so gentle when he was like this. It just made her feel…so much, all at once. Hearing his voice only increased the welling of emotion in her. He didn’t seem heartbroken at least, but she wasn’t very well versed in this sort of reaction and so she couldn’t say how good his reaction was. It seemed at least to be on that end of things. “I love you, Blake.” His fingers moved up and down her spin. She took a deep breath. She was thinking so hard, relaxing into his touch and just holding onto him.

I don’t know… its fine. You’re allowed to feel things, Blake. You can… you’re human. You’re allowed. Calm down. You’re allowed to be happy. Calm down. Her eyes were closed, and again the warmth told her that she should really start blinking if she wanted to keep from crying. It had to be more intense because of the amount of time they’d been spending together. Or maybe it was just the kind of person he was. Or maybe she was lonely. She’d spent so much time not feeling some things, maybe it was a response to being allowed to feel this way again. She just wasn’t sure what it was. Although it had been a long time.

She finally did start speaking, which came out emotional, and borderline teary, and entirely in Spanish. It was the only way she could convince the words to come out at all. “*No sé, soy muy malo en este tipo de emoción. No sé las palabras correctas, pero me preocupo mucho por ti. Tal vez te amo. Yo ... mierda. Ni siquiera sé cómo podría decir esto. Pero ... siento que ... es cierto. Me siento como si estuviera loca y ... asustada y asustada de asustarte y ... pero realmente quiero ser feliz contigo. Y sólo ser feliz. Y sólo estar con usted.” She generally tried not to prattle on in Spanish at anyone who didn’t understand, but at least it was out of her head, even if it wasn’t well conveyed to him at all.

[*I don’t know, I’m really bad at this kind of emotion. I don’t know the right words, but I care about you a lot. Maybe I love you. I… shit. I don’t even know how I could say this. But… I feel like… that’s right. I just feel like I’m crazy and… scared, and scared of scaring you and… but I really want to be happy with you. And just be happy. And just be with you.]

Her body felt limp, not just relaxed, but... drained. He withdrew to view her expression as she spoke, and her eyes were glassy, fighting back tears. His stomach turned. The onslaught didn't reassure. He stopped trying to interpret after (what he assumed was) the first sentence, but she didn't stop.
She had said she wouldn't do this, and now seemed like a particularly bad time. His mind naturally assumed the worst. He fell back into an upright posture, watching the flitting of emotion across her features, the only part of this he could understand. To an extent, anyway. She wasn't happy. That was distressing, more so because he hadn't the slightest inkling why or what to do about it.
Even as she concluded, the man did not welcome her back into his arms. His stare was perplexed and concerned. He had no idea what she had said, what she wanted. Their communication was bad enough when they were speaking the same language.
His hands fell resignedly into his lap; his back hunched. His palm skimmed the bed's surface as he reached toward her, covering her fingertips with his. It wasn't a rekindling of what had been, but it was a start.
"Please just talk to me." Did he have to specify a language?

God she was tired. She felt like she’d lifted something heavy, and he did not look like he had even a guess about what she’d said. Which was fine, really. She would need to speak English before she had any hope that he would understand what she was saying. She was not sure what she expected, but nothing quite this… concerned? Did she sound very alarming? Well, maybe. He moved away from her and she couldn’t exactly manage to feel guilty for what she’d said. It wasn’t that she was trying to bombard him with Spanish. She was distressed, and sometimes she felt things needed to be said in Spanish. It helped her get things out of her mind. The unfortunate side effect was that Kiefer had actually moved away from her.

Eventually his hand came back, which was nice. “Please just talk to me.” Leeloo jumped onto the bed. Blake scooted back farther so her legs were only dangling off at the knee, and Leeloo insistently walked to Blake’s lap. It was as if she knew Blake was upset and felt that it was her responsibility to correct this. She began kneading Blake’s shorts, and Blake winced slightly when claws actually made their way into her skin.

Lo siento… um…” she took a breath, “I don’t think… you have any idea what I said, wh-which is my fault, I just… it wasn’t… I’m… I’m not bad with words, I’m just not good with… closeness. To men. Like this. In… relationships. The last two really sucked, and I think I was better at that than this…” she took a deep breath. She was going to worry him. Mierda. She needed to get it together. “I basically, um, said I wasn’t good at this, and I’m… scared and, um, that I care about you, and I love you too.” Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That sounded right. She could feel whatever she felt, and it was all freaking over the top, but the words were sounding right. And so what if they weren’t sounding right? It was her emotion, she could call it whatever she thought.

The distance and the ensuing silence appeared to upset her further, and Kiefer's eyes opened wide. Lo siento. Okay. That was doable. He was so focused on determining what she was saying to bother wondering why. Fortunately the rest was in English. She correctly wagered that he hadn't understood a word, and he waited patiently for her to rectify the error. I’m not bad with words, I’m just not good with… closeness. To men. Like this. In… relationships. Oh, god. She was breaking up with him.
Kiefer felt the air leave him as she continued on to explain that her last two relationships had sucked. She'd said she wasn't good at them, that she was scared, that she cared. He followed her lips to save himself from having to focus on the hurt in her eyes. And I love you, too. It was tacked onto the end of so much unpleasantness that he nearly failed to react.
Leeloo was in her owner's lap, doing her damnedest to diffuse the unbearable tension, and Kiefer stroked her distractedly. The cat's back rose up to meet his fingertips. He should say something. He was feeling everything, but the physical response was lost somewhere in transit.
"It's nice to meet you finally," he told the cat impassively. "I'm gonna borrow your mom for a second." He gave Leeloo an apologetic head scratch before crowding closer. Kiefer kissed Blake deeply, a hand on the woman's waist. What he couldn't say, he tried to convey with his touch.

If he thought she was acting weird she wasn’t going to argue. She was acting hella weird. She just felt a lot of pressure. She hadn’t felt pressure to tell him she loved him, but she felt pressure to feel properly. She liked him, and the longer she liked him, the more he seemed to want her to return his feelings. That made sense, except that it didn’t make it easier. She felt how she felt, and she’d said how she felt. There was a lot of mess wrapped around the good part. She had no idea that he thought, several times, that she was going to break up with him. That didn’t even make sense. She was holding his hand and had told him she cared about him. Maybe moment to moment distress could account for that guess, but she really wasn’t aware of that wavelength.

So she said her piece. She was done. She was still tired. It was too early to feel this tired. But… it was good. Things would get better. It wasn’t like she would discover she was wrong and have to take it back. It wasn’t a bandage, it was a side effect. She’d been feeling different ever since she saw him so worked up on her behalf. The aftermath of their argument. He continually thought she was dumping him, but instead she said she loved him. She liked this outcome better than any he might come up with in his head to torment himself.

Leeloo was content, making a bed on Blake’s legs. She approved of Kiefer’s affection, even while she found Blake’s hand and shoved her nose into her exposed palm. Yes, she was doing her job. Spreading the love. Kiefer said it was nice to meet her, and Blake smiled weakly, just barely. And he was going to borrow Blake. Oh? He scooted closer and found her lips. Oh. She could handle that. She appreciated the affection, feeling still tired from all her frantic emotions, but comforted. Relieved, finally. She kissed him back, and although Leeloo lay down stubbornly, Blake leaned toward Kiefer, her hand, removed from Leeloo’s face, now returned to Kiefer’s face. In that moment she felt much better. “I’m glad you came over,” she said, feeling like she should say something else, and kissing him again on her own. She would have had to worry until she talked to him if he hadn’t come.
