Two days… TWO WHOLE FUCKING DAYS!

Ugh, this was the biggest fuckin' shit show he'd managed to get himself into and he'd been sittin' on it for over 48 hours at this point. He wasn't sure if the fact that Dorien was coming home today was good or bad but he'd been preparing himself for it as best as he could. Yeah, that fuckin' included drinking but it wasn't like he could get totally blitzed which was kind of a downer but he had enough of a buzz to feel comfortable.

Shit, this was a mess. He shouldn't have even been at Dustin's house that day but how the hell was he supposed to resist that booty call? He liked the Spades. He'd slept with enough of them but there was just something extra about his neighbor that… fuck it. It wasn't important right then. The point was he had been at Dustin's well after the officer had left for his shift and he had been the one to answer the door when a stoutly woman rang the bell looking for Dorien. Now, he should have said Dor was out of town but he'd thought it'd be just so fuckin' funny to pass himself off as the other.

Holy fuck did that bite him in the ass.

The woman was from the Department of Children and Families and she was not alone. She had with her probably the cutest little kid charcoal hair and bright blue eyes clearer than crystal. That kid… he looked frail almost from how skinny he was and Abel damn near couldn't believe it when she said he was four. Worst of it was the shiner around his left eye… Those eyes were enough to label the boy as a Spade but it took a few hours for it to really sink in that Dorien had a kid… or, fuck, that Dor's kid was with him for the next couple of days until the guy came back.

It had been… hell, it had been so awkward. Not intentionally just… he was going to have to explain that he'd sorta accidentally accepted this kid on his buddy's behalf but he couldn't let the little guy get swept into the DCF system… right? Shit… Fuck… He'd thrown some sheets on the spare bed and moved a TV into the guest room to help Spencer, that's what she'd said his name was, feel comfortable or… distracted… something. They'd bonded some too because Abel was really good at that when it came to kids, he was everyone's favorite uncle.

Telling Dor was going to be the hard part but he'd sent a text telling the older male to come over when he got back to town and threw in some totally necessary and raunchy promises to sweeten the deal… like it wasn't already implied but whatever. He'd given Spencer a superhero coloring book and a pack of crayons and set him at the kitchen table while he waited for the familiar sound of the door opening. He had every intention of meeting Dor in the hallway before he had a chance to walk in and see the kid.

He had entirely intended to be out for that duration- not that he knew there was a special package waiting for him at Abel's house. His in-state Probation had ended and Dorien had gone right into the Porn industry. He knew how to fuck, and it was good money, and it was going to make him money faster than digging graves alone. If he wanted out of his Uncle's house soon he was willing to work his ass for it. Literally. The... romping between his uncle and Abel was not new news to him. He was fully aware of it and, thanks to those pesky feelings he had caught, Dorien had done even more than his usual to put distance between it and himself. While the pair were skilled in avoiding others and keeping their little romps secret, they weren't that good. He'd known about it for... fuck... how long now? Too long. And yeah it had bothered him at first, but.... he couldn't.... there were just things, you know?

So it had never been something he focused on. But those damned feelings. Uhg.

All that aside, having been booked for several days for a shoot had been the perfect opportunity to get out of Lochland and take an almost minivacation after everything that had been going on. The Trial, his jail time, his feelings for Abel, finding out he had a daughter- it was just.... so much. And the thing with Filly. Geeze.

But yeah, when he'd been called away for a shoot in New York, it was.. nice. Mean, sex was always great. A scene was always fun. The parties that went with all this was ... fuck, it'd been a blast. He'd ... indulged, and he knew he shouldn't have, but it was there, and the heat of the moment.... Anyway.

It was one hit. Just one. ...er... a day. ..for a few days.

Whatever.

He was bussing back to Lochland with a bit of a smirk on his face, forehead resting against the glass, reading over some ...steamy messages from Abel. Fuck. Uhg. Damn it. Grrrr. Sigh. Feelings. Nope. Couldn't resist.

He was signing his name to a trailer tomorrow. He'd be out of Dustin's house and back on his own feet.

-----

It was a few hours later before he was stepping off the bus and onto Lochland ground. There wasn't even a stop to freshen up- not that the ride had taken that damned long anyway. So he stepped up the little step in front of Abel's house and didn't even bother to knock, letting himself right in. "Hey," He called out, tossing his bag down in the hall, "Sexy Ass!" But he hadn't even fully dropped his bag before Abel was suddenly there in the hall with him. He smiled broadly and immediately went to slip his arms around the other and lean in for a kiss along the neck, "Miss me that much huh?"

In the kitchen, Spencer gave the slightest of jumps at the sudden bang of the door and loud voice. He shifted, sitting on his knees, and once the man he'd been staying with was not within eye sight, he quietly slipped off the chair and darted into the kitchen. He was silent as a mouse when he scurried across the floor in his socks, leaving his shoes behind, and hiding himself away in the bottom of the pantry, carefully closing the door behind himself.

When Spencer had arrived in Lochland he had come with little more than the clothes on his back. The woman had made sure, since most things were lost in the hurricane, including his mother, that Spencer would at least have three sets of clothing. It wasn't much, but it had practically come from her own pocket. He was a quiet kid, very quiet. It had taken him nearly a day and a half before he would sit beside Abel on the couch rather than across the room. While the guest room had been made up for him, Spencer would always wait until Abel had fallen asleep before sneaking down the hallway and quietly sitting down in front of his door, knees drawn, where he would fall asleep. He'd stay in the hall until the morning alarms would go off, then scurry back down the hall or run into the bathroom as if he had been up early.

The bruise on his eye was not the only one, although there was no reason for Abel to know that. Spencer was efficient in taking care of himself. He would go into the bathroom, close the door behind him, bathe, and not open the door until he were dressed in one of Abel's shirts he had been loaned. Then he'd scurry right to bed and not come out from under the blankets until he were sure the man was asleep. This was all too new. Too ... scary. He missed his mother. ...missed home.

He liked kids. They matched his energy and enjoyed the silly things activities that kept his mind from other stuff. So, spending a few days with one wasn't the worst thing ever. Mean… it was a little odd since he didn't actually know this kid but he had tried to be as available as he could for his shy houseguest. It wasn't the most adventurous few days ever but it wasn't awful either. At least… not by his standards, but he couldn't speak for Spencer.

Waiting for Dor to walk in had left him more on edge than he was letting on… fuck this was going to be hard but it wasn't like there was anything else that he could do, right? Mean, even if he had wanted to keep the kid a secret those eyes were a dead give away that he was a Spade. He knew he had to tell his friend even if he didn't exactly know how and that was the momentum he used to bolt into the hallway at the sound of the door. "[i[Hey, Sexy Ass![/i]" Shit, that was probably not the best thing for the kid to hear but maybe he wasn't paying that much attention.

Abel broke into a smirk the second those caramel eyes took in the sight of Dor. The curve of his lips only growing at the arms around his waist and a low growl accompanying it at the kiss to his neck. "Miss me that much, huh?" Pfft, cocky fucker. "Nah. I got perfect aim, I don' miss." Okay, maybe he was the cocky one… Wait… shit, he couldn't let himself get distracted, not with Spencer so close. He wasn't that much of a ho.

Hands pressed against Dor's chest, he let them travel down some over those firm abs before he forced himself to push the other back slightly. "Dor… I gotta tell you something. Something kinda happened while you were gone…" A groan followed the words and he paced a step backward if Dor wasn't still holding him. "Look, 'm not good at this stuff… so 'm just gonna… come out with it, kay?" His gaze had dropped to the side and he pushed a hand through his hair while he waited for some sort of acknowledgment from the other man.

With a playful growl of his own, Dorien had sized two hand fulls of Abel's shirt and burried his face against his friend with benefits' neck, pulling the other hard against himself. He had absolutely every intention of pushing Abel against the wall and making good on those ranchy text messages right then and there. Except that Abel, once he'd felt the man's hands move down to his abs, pushed back from him. At first Dorien wasn't so keen on letting go. He held onto Abel and nearly pulled him back. He would have pulled the other back if he hadn't picked up on the tone of his voice and suddenly all that firskness was right out the damned window. "What happened?" His own tone reflected that he had picked up on Abel's, his eyes a little wider. "Is everyone alright?" His first thought, honestly, was enough to make his stomach feel like ice. What if Abel had just pushed him away because he was in a fucking relationship now? What if it was with Dustin? No, scratch that, Dustin wouldn't do that. He was too far into the closet to probably ever come out. He let Abel move back from him, his hands falling away from the other, and stared at him, especially when the Navy SEAL looked away.

Anything and everything suddenly became a possibility. What had happened while he was gone? Had Abel found out about Alison? He'd pratically sworn Colton to silence until he felt ready to tell the rest of the family about the girl.

In the kitchen, Spencer remained quietly sitting at the bottom of the pantry, his knees pulled up and head down, arms wrapped around his knees.

Six years working with the special ops in the military and none of that had made him near as nervous as what he was supposed to be dealing with right now. It was fuckin' hard droppin' news like this on someone you cared about and no matter how cool he tried to play it, he cared about all the Spades. Dorien and him… they had a history and that complicated things some but it didn't mean he wanted to hurt the guy. Or… havin' a kid wasn't hurting him but it wasn't… fuck he never shoulda lied to that DCF worker. Shouldn't she have checked I.D.?

Ugh. Whatever.

It was really too late to worry about that shit now. He had to worry about the doe-eyed kid in his kitchen and how the hell he was supposed to explain shit to his friend. "What happened? Is everyone alright?" He shook his head but didn't bother shifting his eyes back to the other. "Yeah… yeah, everyone is fine…" His hand brushed over his face and he groaned softly before reaching out and grabbing one of Dorien's hand. "Just… c'mere," He began pulling the other into the kitchen, "'s easier this way."

Leading them both into the kitchen he stopped upon seeing the empty table. "Uh…" He released his grip and began looking around the room. There was only so far the kid could have gone since he hadn't heard the back door and him and Dor had been blocking the hallway. "Fuckin' hell don't tell me I lost your kid…" Er… that wasn't really supposed to come out like that but he was kind of distracted looking for a four-year-old.

No, everyone was fine. Okay, that was out of the way. Dorien visibly relaxed and exhaled as he closed his eyes, "Had me fucking s-" But before he could finish Abel was grabbing him by the hand and pulling him down the hall and towards the kitchen.

There was a moment of 'what?' when Abel looked confused. Dor's gaze focused on what was on the kitchen table, tilting his head lightly. A coloring book, crayons, the chair pushed out slightly. He didn't spy the shoes on the floor. He might have if Abel hadn't just said something that shocked him out of his curiosity of helping him search for whatever he had lost, "Alison?" His head cocked forward when he said it, shoulders up slightly, mouth open and confusement written on his own face, "Wh-" He stopped, then looked to the side as he drew in a sharp breath, "I, she... I know she's in Lochland." He looked back at Abel, shaking his head lightly, expression softening, "She just fucking pops up all over the place, I didn't, this wasn't how I wanted to tell you about her."

Well shit.

If only he knew that was not the kid Abel was talking about.

There was a distinct lack of Lisa Frank gelpens scattered on the table, but that didn't even cross his mind.

Hidden into the pantry, Spencer chewed his lower lip and balled himself up a little more.

He was so fuckin’ good at hide n’ seek! It was his nieces’ favorite game to try and best him at but he was better if he knew he was playing. This was just great… two whole days with Spence and everything had been great but the second Dor gets there and things go to shit. Fuck. Losing Spence wasn’t part of the plan and neither was inadvertently outing that he was looking for Dorien’s kid. Hell, he hadn’t even realized he’d said anything until he got a reply.

Alison?” His features screwed into a look of confusion. “Wh- I, she... I know she's in Lochland. She just fucking pops up all over the place, I didn't, this wasn't how I wanted to tell you about her.” He turned away from the cabinet he was checking and leaned on the counter, staring at Dorien. “Who the hell is Alison?” He wasn’t annoyed or anything, just confused as fuck. There was a moments pause before he remembered what he was doing.

Spencer had to be around here somewhere… seriously where was he? Abel even checked the dishwasher before twisting the knob of the pantry and cracking it open. He’d turned back to Dor before looking inside. “Wait…” Things had just clicked. “You have a daughter?

Wait, what? Fuck. . . . . Fuck. Damn.

... crap.

When Abel leaned on the counter, Dorien's head cocked back and his eyes widened. Wait. Shit. There was absolutely no going back on what he had just said. He pressed his lips together and swallowed as he looked to the side, hands sliding into his back pockets. "I-uh-" Then, it was his turn to screw up his face and give Abel a confused look once more, shaking his head as he leaned forward, "Ww-w--wh-" It was not often in life that Dorien stuttered, but he could not get his 'w' to press past his lips to form a real word.

It took him closing his eyes, clearing his throat, and shifting his footing before he cocked his head to the side again and slowly brought a hand up to point down at the dishwasher that had been opened, "What are you looking for... a kid... in the dishwasher for?" He stepped forward again, hand still up, gaze on Abel, those blue eyes furrowed by the brows above them, "What kid are you talking about?"

This .... no, he had to set Alison and that explanation aside for a moment. What in the ever loving shit fucking hell was Abel talking about, and what was he looking for. Did he have a real kid there? Like... but why the fucking dishwasher, how uncomfortable would that be to hide in?!

The twist of the knob above his head made the boy jump and squeeze his eyes shut. The words were muffled but the voices... they didn't sound happy.

No answer was given to his question and he thought for a millisecond about pressing the issue. A few things stopped him. First, it wasn’t really any of his business. Second, he didn’t want to argue with Dorien. And finally, he had to find Spencer because he was legitimately worried about what the kid might get into.

What kid are you talking about?” Pft. If Dor could avoid questions then he could too and that’s exactly what he was doing. He turned and pulled the door open enough to peer inside. Holy fuck the relief he felt seeing the kid balled up on the floor was glorious and he exhaled a heavy sigh as he sank to his knees.

Hey, Spence…” His hand shifted from the brassy knob to the kid’s knee. “You okay, bud?” The hardness in his voice had faded into something far gentler. “Ya scared me, hidin’ like that.” Scooting a bit closer to the boy, he kept his attention on him. He knew this was probably too much for him and he was concerned.

He got no answer. Okay, fair... ish. But when Abel knelt down and began to speak to what he suspected was not a sack of potatoes, in a voice so fucking gentle that it took Dorien a split second to tune in to it. He felt cemented in place. This was not a joke. It was not a joke. There was no prank here. Abel had a kid that he was saying was his kid.

Spence. Spencer.

He sucked in a hard breath and actually took a slight step back when that name came tumbling off Abel's lips. He turned away, paced in a full circle, and then turned back around and began to inch his way into the kitchen itself, both hands brushing over his hair, "Abel...." he couldn't manage much more than a gentleness that echoed Abel's own. Unless told or motioned to stop in his tracks, Dorien would edge into the kitchen just far enough to peer over Abel's head where he was crouched down. His lips parted, mouth falling open so softly to exhale a gentle breath. Peering at Abel, not himself, were eyes he felt he'd looked into all his life.

It wasn't until those blue eyes turned on him that Dorien felt himself freeze. He was staring at the kid.

When the door creaked open, Spencer kept his head down at first. His feet shifted, toes stacked, and only after Abel had spoken did he peer up from where his head was in his arms. As another man slowly appeared, Spencer fixed his crystal stare on him, then tucked his head down sharply and mumbled something that didn't carry out of his lap where he'd spoken.

This was a mess. Nothing was going how he had fuckin’ thought it would go and worst of all the kid was all tucked in a ball and hiding. He hadn’t even spared a glance back at Dor when he’d heard his name. Hell… he couldn’t bring himself to turn around and see how his friend was handling things when he had a kid in pantry who seemed to be in a panic all his own. How was he supposed to make this right? Could he even do that? Like… was it fuckin’ possible to smooth all this shit over?

Probably not but getting Spence out of the food closet was step number one. He could hear Dor moving around behind him but kept that amber stare on Spencer as those bright blue eyes stared widely past him for a few seconds and then his head was ducked down again. Scooting slightly closer still, his hand moved to the kids shoulder and then to gently stroke his back. “’s alright, buddy. Look, ‘m not gonna let anythin’ happen to ya, okay? But you gotta come out of the pantry.

He paused for a brief second, his gaze flitting around but ultimately landing on Spencer again. “You c’n sit on my lap if you’d feel better.” He was learning little things about the kid. Spence was quiet and independent but he liked familiarity… he’d cling to the social worker when he’d met Abel too so… maybe he needed someone to cling to now.

Saying his mind was a jumble would have been an entire lie. Because right then, no matter what Dorien wanted to do, his brain might as well have been putting out the same sound an EKG machine did when someone flat lined. It was like not a single brain cell had decided to check in that day and all he could do was stare at the tiny form that seemed to fit so perfectly in the bottom of Abel's fucking pantry. It wasn't even until the kid unfurled himself that Dorien realized he had been holding his breath and took a sharp gasping one as he looked away.

This was not a dream. This wasn't some crazy ass dream like he'd fallen asleep on the bus after having bad gas station food or something.

There was a tiny fucking kid here that Abel was implying was his.

He felt sick. His stomach felt ready to empty it's contents right onto the kitchen floor and the only thing preventing him from doing so was probably the shock of everything. He stepped back, giving the pair a little more space, but kept his stare on the boy after a quick glance away. Holy fucking shit.

Spencer wasn't keen on the idea of sitting on anyone's lap quite yet. He had started to bond with the guy he'd been introduced to as his father, so who this other guy was, was beyond the kid. Unfortunately the social worker had been rushed- over stressed, under paid, and over worked. When she had first arrived she had to shuffle through no less than fifteen folders in her briefcase before finding Spencer's and honestly there had been a number of papers just free floating in her case. It was not an uncommon happening, especially after they had a flood of displaced and misplaced children after something like the hurricane. In fact when she had found Spencer's file, it was thin. Digital files would be called up later, but currently this was all she had access to. It was by a stroke of luck that the kid knew his first, last, and middle name so when he'd been found he had been entered into the system pretty quickly and his birth record drawn up for identification purposes.

They had no photo of Dorien Spade and had no time to waste looking online to try and verify it-- the fact that no ID had been checked was a slip up, but things like this happened. She had other kids to place, other families to reconnect.

But, all that aside, Spencer had started to bond. The guy he'd been left with was trying to be fun, but the fact was he'd just been through a shit storm and was not willing to come out of his shell. He was, though, attached in the idea that this guy was way more familiar to him than the stranger who he'd spied. That other guy was freaking huge and bulky and scary as far as the four year old was concerned. And loud, too.

But when Abel suggested he could sit on his lap, that meant physical contact, and right then Spencer felt he could use some of that. He flung his tiny form at Abel, arms around his neck, and immediately buried his face against his shoulder so his face couldn't be seen and he couldn't see the other man. Tiny hands gripped Abel's shirt like life depended on it.

The whole situation was a little fuckin' screwy but he was trying really hard not to take it out on the kid because… he knew better. He'd dug himself into this hole of having to find a way to tell Dor what he'd done and that was all him. Spencer didn't need to be involved beyond that little part of being the kid. Nah, the little guy was innocent and he needed to stay that way. Abel hated drama enough to know draggin' other people, especially kids, into it was a shitty thing to do.

His original plan had just been to introduce the two to each other and kinda fill in the blanks from there but when he couldn't find Spence that posed a bit of a problem. N' when he did finally locate the kid all curled up n' helpless on the floor of the pantry… well… it tugged at those not-so-hard-to-reach-heartstrings. Makin' sure the kid was alright became his priority over even introducing him to his father and the second those tiny hands clasped onto his shirt, Abel was wrapping his arms protectively around the boy.

"'S alright." He spoke softly, pulling Spencer closer as he did. "I got ya." Rubbing his back softly, his other arm supported the kid's rear and Abel straightened on his feet before finally turning back to Dor. Chestnut eyes, wide with worry, fixated on his friend. "I uh… I got dinner comin'. Figured you n' Spence could stay here tonight n' I c'n try to explain what happened…" What the hell was he supposed to say?

Abel stood up, and then he was facing Dorien and speaking. It took five fucking seconds- which was a long time- for Dorien to even register the words his friend had spoken. He had been too busy staring at this tiny figure now clinging to one of his closest friends. Dinner was on it's way, and Abel wanted, had thought, that he and Spence could stay the night. Dor's jaw tightened as he cleared his throat and had to absolutely force himself to tear his gaze off the boy's small back and lift it instead to meet that chocolate stare which was so full of worry that it somehow made his own chest ache.

Uhg. What had just happened?

What... what was happening at all?

As if his brain had clicked back into action and all those brain cells decided that staring wasn't the best thing to do since it wouldn't be getting anything done, Dorien drew in another breath, wet his lips, and then stroked his hand down his mouth and chin as he began not nod, "Right, yeah...uh..." Well fuck.

First off: This was so... fucking awkward. Especially having just ratted himself out that he had a daughter. Secondly: There was a slim chance that booty call was going to be happening tonight. It wasn't so much that he didn't feel like throwing Abel on the bed, but it was just... there was this kid, you know? And it just complicated things. He hadn't even seen the kid's face, just a peep of a blue eye.

He was in some way this strange mix of curiosity over the kid and absolute fear which seemed to have glued him into place until he willed himself to take two steps back once more and then finally move further away, brushing one hand over his hair, "Uh... I... I gotta grab Tyto...'er" He shook his head, dropping his hand away and dismissing the idea with a wave of his hand, his voice very light when he spoke again after watching the kid shift his death grip on Abel. "I-uh, no, I mean, I'll just give Dus- uh, no he's just.." There was a moment where he just had to close his eyes, took a deep breath, and put his hand up to pat the air slightly, "Is it cool if I open the shared gate to let Tyto over?"

When he opened his eyes he was looking at the kid again, his attention flicking quickly between the pair, "Is that... would that scare him?...Ss-pence?" During his little mini vacation in New York, which he was now regretting because this little surprise had his heart rate up and he could just feel himself craving for a release with the flood of euphoria in his veins, he'd left Tyto with Dustin. He could have taken the dog to the over-night boarder but ...that kind of cost extra money at the moment and with the trailer, well, shit...yeah. Ever inch of Dorien looked nervous and on edge. He wasn't even bothering to make an attempt at hiding it right then, it was too hard for the fact it was taking everything he had not to absolutely freak out.

There was another kid? Why was the kid here? Who was the kid? Where did it-- uh, he come from? How old was he? Why was he at Abel's house? If the kid was his, why wasn't he contacted ? How long had the boy been here? Why hadn't Abel called him and told him to come home immediately for an emergency!?

It was fucked. He knew it was. He should have handled things so much differently… so much better but it was really just too fuckin' late for that right now. His aversion to all that serious shit had been dreading even telling Dorien at all, let alone rushing it and now the moment was upon him and all he could think about was how was Spencer handling all this shit. Hell… that kid had been through some shit already and he was clinging so tightly to Abel's shirt that the former SEAL couldn't focus on much else even if he wanted to.

"Right, yeah… uh…" Abel didn't bother following Dor's movements. He'd let the guy pace or backpedal or whatever he needed to do to work shit out in his head. "Uh... I... I gotta grab Tyto...'er I-uh, no, I mean, I'll just give Dus- uh, no he's just.. Is it cool if I open the shared gate to let Tyto over? Is that... would that scare him?...Ss-pence?" Right… Ty… He half shrugged because he wasn't really sure but kids generally liked dogs, right? "Mean… I guess it's cool. Tyto listens so…. Should be fine. Spence does okay with Spirits."

Abel walked over to the fridge and grabbed two beers and a similarly styled plastic bottle of root beer.
