Ryan usually didn't have a sweet tooth. As a matter of fact, Ryan didn't eat that much sweet at all. Not that he was on a diet or anything. He just wasn't the type to eat sweets all the time. Some of his friends would tease him about this and call him a health freak. Okay, maybe he kind of was a health freak, but that wasn't on purpose. He just had to stay in shape because of his job. However, there were some days that he would be craving something sweet and today was that day.

This was why he was at the bakery looking at the different desserts. He usually would bring Jojo with him, but decided not too. While he may not have that much of a sweet tooth, Jojo did. He remembered when he brought Jojo to the bakery a few weeks ago. The little girl seemed like she wanted everything that she saw. She even had a tantrum when she couldn't get what she wanted. The last thing he wanted was for his daughter to make a scene in the bakery. So he was by himself looking for at the desserts.

Sadly, he didn't know what he wanted. He could get a pie, but some of the cakes were looking delicious. There some tarts that were calling his name, but he didn't know if that was all he wanted. Ryan sighed as he kept debating what to get. Why did this have to be so hard? He was only picking out a dessert. It wasn't like he was making a big decision or something. If only he had a second opinion from someone.

The day had been a long and lazy one as far as work days had gone. From the time Nikolai had clocked in and started preparing beverages to this point now when he was slowly cleaning the tables, there wasn't much that happened. There had been the usual crowd: those who always came there everyday and got their coffee products and sweet treats. There had also been the non-regulars: those just stopping in to browse or needed a quick pick-me-up for one reason or another. But everything had been perfectly manageable. Even work rush, which typically happened early morning and early afternoon, had been just fine.

Now he was taking the time to get everything wrapped up before the end of his shift. The responsible part of him knew that he would be going home and putting in a great deal of time studying. There were some finals coming up in a month or so. The less responsible part of him wanted to go spend time doing something else. His mind was on a certain someone and he was eager, almost impatient, to get out of work and go home and text that certain someone.

He was thinking of buying something for Preston and he had settled on maybe getting the guy a few sweets. However, it had slipped his mind as he was leaving Looseleaf Books that he actually worked somewhere where he could buy pastries and such. He had already driven away and then remembered. Oh well. There were other places to go, such as the Plum Street Bakery. Two vanilla cream stuffed cupcakes were bought and then Niko found himself opening his phone. And then he noticed Ryan. "Hello" he began in a friendly voice with only a slight bit of his accent showing through. "Do you need any help?" His dark gaze glanced at the array of sweets and then back to Ryan. Even though he didn't work there, coming from his shift at Looseleaf Books had him still in work-mode.

Ryan we still trying to figure out which dessert should he get. Maybe he should have brought his daughter since the four year old knew what type of dessert that she wanted. He chuckled as he thought about Jojo. The little girl would have known what she wanted unlike her father, who was still debating what he wanted. There were so many different desserts to choose from, which made it difficult. He sighed as he kept looking. Nothing was standing out to him or calling his name. He was still looking when he heard someone else's voice.

"Are you waiting in line or something? Or are you just going to stand there and look pretty?" The woman had asked Ryan. Clearly by the tone of her voice she was getting annoyed with Ryan. He didn't know why. It wasn't like he was in the way or something. He wasn't by the cash register, but somehow the woman didn't noticed. She was too busy trying to get a rise out, which was odd. Though it didn't work since Ryan was in a good mood and he wasn't going to let some woman make him angry. So he smiled at the lady. "No I'm not waiting in line or standing here just to look 'pretty' as you said. I'm just looking at the desserts to see which one I want," he said. "If you already know what you want you can go ahead buy it now. I'm not in your way since I'm no where near the cash register." The woman blushed, clearly embarrassed at the little scene that she had cause. Ryan wanted to smirk, but instead turn back to looking at the desserts.

A few minutes later Ryan heard someone else speaking to him. It was a man's voice and this person had greeted him. Glancing at the guy, Ryan nodded. "Hey," he said before looking at the desserts. When the guy asked if Ryan needed help, it made the man think. Ryan wouldn't said that he needed help from someone just to buy dessert. He knew that he would eventually find something he wanted for him and Jojo. But it wouldn't hurt to hear someone else's opinions. "Sure. I wouldn't mind hearing some of your suggestions."

Sweets weren't a weakness for Nikolai, except for when it came to hot vanilla lattes. Now they were definitely a weakness for the Russian. He didn't add anything extra to the drink either. It was delicious as is. When it came to things like pastries, cakes, ice cream, and the like, Niko did like them but he didn't usually go crazy for them. He didn't try to avoid them or overdo it. They were a treat and he understood that. Today had been a day when he figured that he wanted something and not from his job. It was decided in his mind to go to an actual bakery and try to get something that was extremely fresh.

Politeness had been taught and ingrained in him since he was a child, so when he saw Ryan looking lost and undecided at the display case, Niko could not help but try to be of assistance. There weren't always a lot of polite people in the world and Nikolai watched as a woman practically harassed Ryan for simply staring too long at the array of sweets. Really, it was rude but he did not intervene. There was no need to do so. This man seemed to have the same patience that Nikolai had. It made him smile. He watched as the woman blushed and, perhaps, seemed to rethink her approach to the situation.

Niko gave a nod at the returned greeting, his smile genuine as he waited to see if Ryan wanted his advice or not. "Sure. I wouldn't mind hearing some of your suggestions." His eyes flicked over to the display case and he began to speak as he stared at the array of desserts before them. "I am happy to guide, although your own taste will ultimately decide. Chocolate, I believe, is always an easy choice, but if you want to go with vanilla, then I'd suggest a simple cake with a simple frosting. However, if you want less added sugar, there are the fresh fruit tartlets. It is as it looks: fresh fruit on top of a crust, with perhaps some whipped cream." As he spoke of each item, Nikolai followed the description by gesturing towards the appropriate item.

"A personal strawberry shortcake is also good. It is a decent enough balance between fruit, cake, and cream." His eyes scanned the display case. "It also looks like they have some chocolate-dipped fruit today too." His gaze paused over the plain vanilla cupcakes that had thick dollops of butter cream topped with strawberries. "I'll take one of those, please," he said rather politely to the cashier. "That is, when the gentleman here is done deciding." There was no malice or sarcasm in his voice. He was being polite.
